191.983 women already died in 2007
Every minute a woman dies while giving birth to her child. At least 20 women a minute suffer from serious complications during childbirth, such as chronically diseases, injuries or fistula. Protecting the mothers´ lives is one of the main development goals. Following strategies should help to improve the situation on a worldwide level:
- all women must have access to contraceptives to avoid unintentional pregnancies
- all pregnant women must have access to medical treatment when giving birth
- all women who suffer from complications must have access to emergency supply
In countries like China, Cuba, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Honduras or Tunisia the maternal death rate declined significantly during the last decades – family planning consultations was increased, medical treatment and emergency supply was extended. The death rate dropped about more than half during the last 10 years in some of those countries.
